A Liberal councillor who made LGBT+ history
Sam Green was the first openly gay politician ever elected in the UK – and possibly the world.
It is always sad when a Councillor dies in office, and the death only a few weeks ago of Cllr Kevin Hurn, District Councillor for Central Wymondham shocked Councillors across the political spectrum. However, life goes on, and the Liberal Democrats have selected Town Councillor Stephen Witt to contest the now vacant seat.
Stephen Witt took the Town Council seat of Wymondham Central from the Greens last year with two thirds of the vote on the same day as the General Election.
On 22nd January 2026 voters in Central Wymondham will have a the chance to elect another Liberal Democrat champion to represent Wymondham at South Norfolk Council alongside Cllrs Suzanne Nuri-Nixon, Carmina McConnell and Dave Roberts.

Members have elected Josh Babarinde, MP for Eastbourne, as the new President of the Liberal Democrats.
